Welcome back ✨.
Today I have a short story to share with you …
(Disclaimer : I won’t be using real names here )
It’s based in Kenya
Mel grew up in the rural parts of Kenya and like any normal child, she lived happily with her parents. Moreover she managed to access education by attending the local school in the area and that was more than enough for her. Education would be fulfillment of all her dreams and she was all about that.
Unfortunately. she lost her father due to an illness and then things started getting rough. Her mother more than shaken with the sudden death resorted to drinking.
It was a downward spiral from there and calamity struck for the second time. Her mother passed on…
She had barely made it through school to get to high school. Mel had to become an adult at her young age and had to begin fending for herself. (Her relatives well ……. ..she was on her own now)
She headed to the city to see if things would get better. She got employed as a house help and at that she was thorough. She did an amazing job and then all of a sudden fortune knocked on her door. God was starting to smile of this daughter of his
Her employer asked her “what’s the one thing you’d want to be given as a gift for all the good work you’ve done for me these past 3 years?” Mel’s response was simple . “I want to go and finish school”. She wanted to get to high school and complete her studies.
Believe it or not she was actually sponsored all through high school and while at that managed to plead on behalf of another lady to her employer and she too got full sponsorship.
She had helped someone… She who she thought of as helpless had helped someone.
She kept on wondering how many more people she could help.
That’s when it all came to her. She would help those who have no one to help them. Abandoned children.. some orphaned.. each story was different but Mel wanted to give them just a ray of hope.
That’s when she found herself in charge of children and with a children’s home where she cares and looks after these children. She gets donors to assist financially and materially here and now. She herself spreads the word around. She preaches and hopes that anyone who meets her and is touched offers a small donation of any kind just to assist.
The kind of preaching she does is that one in the buses. Where she just has to stand and speak to disinterested people who think she’s out to extort them.. but she has to do it! It’s for the children ! She’s all they’ve got and she can’t let them down. Life has been hard enough…
I heard Mel share this story and I remembered myself sitted one time in a bus. Hearing a lady talk about children and how she needed funds to help them. I don’t know if she was the one I heard that day in that bus. But here I was on this day .. taking the little I had to assist. I don’t know if God led me here to this children’s home..
but I know that there are many people out here with bad intentions and some also dishonest. It’s hard to know if a person is genuine at times and deserving of help. Maybe this was a sign that she deserved help from me and many others…
Mel has shown me a selfless nature that not so many have. Indeed I have learnt that if I’m able to part with a few coins .. it’s not up to me to determine the honesty or intentions of a person. I should give with a cheerful heart and I think you should too. After all .. people’s heart can be touched and if they had bad intentions they can do aright.
As August ends …I have discovered a hero.
These little things in life are not so little
See you again next week.
Enjoy your weekend ✨
A touch, a kind word, a smile, a genuine compliment, a listening ear and the smallest act of concern, is worth more than anyone can imagine

She is a brave woman with a kind heart. I think this is motivation for us to strive to do what we can to help in society, a little act of kindness can go a long way… I.e Mel’s employer helping her come to self actualisation.
